Western Digital, the world’s second largest maker of hard disk drives (HDDs), has unveiled a new series of Hard Drives that feature large cache, advanced controller, advanced mechanical design as well as several technologies that allow WD to claim that Black Caviar are the fastest 7200rpm-class drives on the market.

“WD Caviar Black Hard Drives offer the highest capacity and performance in a desktop class drive available on the market today enabling users to maximize the features and functionality of power computing applications such as multimedia, video and photo editing,” said Don Bennett, WD vice president and general manager of desktop storage.

WD Black Caviar 3.5” HDDs with 7200rpm spindle speed, 32MB of cache and dual-core controller are available in 750GB and 1GB capacities, providing enthusiasts high performance amid maximum capacity available today. According to Western Digital’s own tests, WD Black Caviar Hard Drives are the fastest 3.5” 7200rpm models available today, though, the company has not disclosed its test details.

WD Caviar Black 750GB and 1TB Hard Drives will be available shortly through select distributors and resellers. Manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) for the WD Caviar Black 750GB is $199 and the 1TB should cost $249.

Separately Western Digital unveiled its new “blue, green, black” product marking system that allows clients to easily choose an HDD that suits their demands. WD Caviar Blue represents the performance and reliability that WD has been building for over 20 years, the WD Caviar Green employs WD’s GreenPower technology for cool, quiet and eco-friendly operation, while the WD Caviar Black family of Hard Drives delivers maximum performance for today's discriminating technology enthusiasts.
