Gigabyte Technology, a leading maker of various computer components, this week announced its low-cost small form-factor mobile computer that will compete against systems like Asustek’s Eee PC or MicroStar International’s Wind. Unlike the competitors, Gigabyte M912V is a tablet PC, hence, features touch-screen. However, the novelty may not be as affordable as its rivals.
Gigabyte M912V comes with 8.9” screen with 1280*768 resolution and is based on Intel Atom N270 (1.60GHz) processor as well as Intel 945GSE and ICH7-M core-logic with integrated graphics core. The notebooks will be equipped with 1GB of DDR2 memory, 160GB hard disk drive, memory card reader, ExpressCard slot, 1.3MP webcam, Ethernet controller, Wi-Fi controller, Bluetooth controller, audio outputs, USB ports and so on. The weight of the machine is about 1.3Kg (2.86 pounds).
“To meet various needs for portability, touch-screen, and multi-media (audio-video entertainment, and Internet browsing), the exterior of the product is cut and thin in its shape and silver/black in its color, featuring lightweight and fashionable design,” a statement by Gigabyte describes design of the product.
Various models of the Gigabyte M912V mobile systems will feature Microsoft Windows XP Home, Microsoft Windows Vista Home Basic as well as Linux operating systems.
The price of the M192V was not announced, however, it is unlikely that it will be as affordable as entry-level models from Asustek or MSI. Unlike its rivals, it features higher-resolution touch screen with LED backlight as well as larger hard disk drive. Nevertheless, Gigabyte’s netbook is based on low-cost Intel Atom process, just like the other notebooks.
