Vigilante / Revenge Tactics Lifted from B-movie FavoritesIt looks like IBM is offering corportations the ability take control of spam into their own hands with the offer of spamming back the spammer.?Instead of merely using the reply-to address in the email header, IBM's technology identifies the offending server and bounces messages back at it, effectively launching a DDoS of their own against the spammer.?This has two effects, it will slow down the spam server and since messages get bounced back, the higher the volume of unwanted email, the more returns.?Second is cost, this costs both the spammer and ISP more money and hopefully this will kick start ISPs into becoming more proactive about spam servers inside their own network.
This idea is similar to a Lycos screensaver that was released a few months ago that battered known spam servers but had to be quickly taken off line as it became too effective.?IBM has a free download of their program dubbed, FairUCE, available here
