Intel will not be able to ship more than 500,000 Pentium D dual-core processors this year, as demand will not pick up until 2006, sources with motherboard makers in Taiwan said yesterday.Well, the headline above pretty much sums it up. Intel is not expected to ship more than half a million Pentium D processors this year. The reason cited is a lack of major demand. Third quarter estimates place shipments at around 100,000 units. Also, due to limited supply of processors and chipsets, it is estimated that the 945-platform motherboards will only reach 7% of total Intel-based motherboard shipments.
By 2006, I pretty much expect most computers being shipped to contain dual-core processors, so I would say that the same train of logic applies to AMD and their X2 as well.
