Intel cancels plan to update the core of the Pentium Extreme Edition 840Don't worry, the more consumer oriented 820/830/840 D's will still get the update; with the more costly 830 and 840 being updated Oct.21/05 and the less expensive 820 being updated Mar.3/05
The Inq did not have any information why the 840EE update was cancelled, but speculates that Intel may have sufficient chips on hand to satisfy anticipated future demand.
The core update increases AMD 64 bit compatibility, adding the missing LAHF and SAHF instructions.
Now if I were guessing, I'd be wondering if we might see an 850EE before March. Granted, they probably have enough 840EE's on hand to fill any orders they may get in the near future, but if they don't bring out a higher end product they may have to rev the 840EE's core next year.
Intel will also drop the P4 561 and 571 in Jan/05, only six months after introducing them in June of this year. Apparently they are being discontinued due to demand shifting to other Intel processors, and the last parts will be packaged by Mar/06.
Speculating based on these moves I would not be at all surprised to see some Yonah cores and Extreme Yonah's appear in the March time frame.
