Asustek Computer, one of the world's largest producers of computer components, demonstrates its dual-chip Radeon X1600 XT graphics card at the Computex Taipei 2006 exhibition. Asus is among several companies who unveil this kind of products at the show, however, its positioning remains pretty unclear.
Asus EAX1600 XT Dual graphics card sports two Radeon X1600 XT graphics processors and uses proprietary print-circuit board, according to a picture published by OCWorkBench web-site. No actual details are known in regards and the product and it is also unclear whether Asus plans to sell it, however, similar graphics boards are showcased by GeCube and HIS manufacturers as well.
Earlier it was reported that HIS?dual-GPU Radeon X1600 XT graphics card will employ a special TLX bridge chip that will connect the chips between each other and the system. HIS Gemini Radeon X1600 XT board will sport two Radeon X1600 XT chips with 590MHz clock-speed, 256MB of 1380MHz GDDR3 memory per processor, two dual-link DVI outputs and so on. Asus graphics card features two dual-link DVI, two D-sub and video input/video output (VIVO) connectors. Additionally, Asus will supply a standalone power supply unit with the dual-chip board.
A PCI Express bridge chip is also used by Nvidia Corp. on its dual-GPU GeForce 7900 and 7950 GX2 graphics cards. However, while Nvidia promotes its GeForce 7950 GX2 graphics cards as the most-powerful single graphics product, dual-Radeon X1600 XT will scarcely attain performance of the Radeon X1900 GTO, which is sold for $299.
Earlier this year GeCube announced plans to ship its graphics card with two Radeon X1600 XT chips for $399, but then the firm re-evaluated its intentions, but did not set any concrete price-points. Now that the Radeon X1900 GTO with 36 pixel shader processors, 12 texture units and 8 vertex shader processors released with recommended price of $299, the dual-chip Radeon X1600 XT should retail at a lower cost, if the manufacturers want such a product, which boasts with 24 pixel shader processors, 8 texture units and 10 vertex shader processors, to be successful.
