Several months have passed since Universal Scientific Industrial (USI) has acquired Abit brand-name and so far it cannot be said that the legendary brand is back in the game. But recently USI's executives finally outlined the goals the company wants to achieve with Abit trademark.

Abit has always been known as a provider of premium-class mainboards with overclocking capabilities. In addition to that, the company offered its customers graphics cards, however, when late last year Abit Computer was nearing bankruptcy, the company had to fully concentrate on mainboards only and later even sell the brand-name. The new owner, however, wants to use Abit trademark to increase its presence in the channel market and consequently to broaden the product lineup.

?In the long-term, we understand that it doesn't bring any economic benefits to sell a single product under one brand. When selling a large selection of products, having one brand would then bring the most efficiency. In addition to motherboards, we are considering offering WLAN, communications- and network-related product lines under the Abit brand,?said CY Wei, the president of USI, in an interview with DigiTimes web-site.

Communication equipment is definitely not something Abit is known for, however, this market grows rapidly. Nevertheless, without being known in the communication/network markets, Abit will just become one of the many suppliers of appropriate equipment, thus, the value of the brand will decline. It is unclear whether the new Abit plans to offer any graphics cards or similar components under its trademark.

USI agreed to pay $10.9 million (350 million Taiwanese dollars) in cash and 20 million preferred shares of USI's newly established subsidiary for Abit's motherboard brand ?Abit? as well as all patents, products, business and human resources related to its motherboard business.
