The world's largest maker of personal computers (PCs), Dell, and its fully-owned subsidiary Alienware have announced their first breed of AMD Live! PCs designed for living rooms. The notable fact about the new computers by Dell is that it no longer offers Intel Viiv platform-based computers, which are direct rivals for the Live!.
Dell was one of the first computer manufacturers to adopt Intel Viiv platform for its Dell Dimension 5150c and Dell XPS 400 desktops following the introduction of the Viiv early this year. Currently no Intel Viiv systems could be located on Dell's web-sites in Europe and the U.S. Alienware also was quick to announce support for the Viiv platform, however, also only used it in its desktop computers, not media center PCs, systems for which Intel Viiv has been developed.
This week at the DigitalLife 2006 event, Alienware is expected to provide technology demonstrations of its new DHS media center featuring integrated home theater amplifier from D2Audio Corp. as well as 燦vidia nForce 430 core-logic with GeForce 6150 graphics. Currently Alienware ships DHS 2-series systems that match design of consumer electronics quipment based on Intel 915P core-logic and not compliant with Viiv specification. Dell also announced new Dimension and XPS media center systems featuring AMD Live! moniker, but it is not clear whether they are meant to be a part of the living rooms.
揂s a leading supplier of high-performance and multimedia computers, Dell delivers innovative technology and services that consumers trust and value,?said Joe Curley, Dell director of Dimension and XPS desktop product marketing. 揑nnovative technologies like AMD Live! delivered on Dimension PCs demonstrate how dual-core technology empowers customers to access and manage their music, movies, and photos where and when they want.
It is unclear whether Alienware and Dell have plans to create media center computers for living rooms with Intel Viiv inside.
AMD Live! is AMD's platform designed for entertainment and media center personal computers, which, in addition to certain hardware, offers various services meant to improve end-user multimedia experience. AMD does not publicly provide any concrete requirements for computers carrying AMD Live! logotype, but said that the systems should be capable of streaming music 搕hrough entertainment center? viewing and sharing photos on the TV, burning recorded TV shows, videos, music and pictures to a DVD or CD, or transfer this same content to a notebook, portable media player (PMP) or personal digital assistant (PDA).
Confidential documents by AMD oblige AMD Live! and AMD Live! Entertainment personal computers to feature dual-core energy efficient AMD Athlon 64 X2 processors in AM2 form-factor, high definition 5.1 audio, Gigabit Ethernet, processor cooling-system fan control capability and some other requirements. The systems should run Windows XP Media Center Edition operating system.
