Despite of the lack of progress with new chipsets compatible with processors for Intel Corp., Via Technologies will continue to develop new core-logic sets for Intel microprocessors, the company is reported to have said. This may be a positive new for shareholders of Via, as when ATI ceases to develop and make chipsets for Intel's chips in 2007 and beyond, Via will have the market to occupy.
Via Technologies will keep developing chipsets supporting the platform, Via Technologies executives were quoted as saying in an interview with Taiwanese news-paper Commercial Times, reports DigiTimes web-site. Once Via receives processor system bus ?authorization?from Intel, the company will provide its AGTL+ chipset product plans to its clients, the executives were quoted as saying.
The Taiwanese largest developer of chipsets unveiled its latest Intel-compatible core-logic Via PT890 back in April, 2006. While the new set of chips supports Intel Pentium 4, Intel Pentium D and Intel Core 2 Duo processors, mainboard makers have so far been reluctant in adopting the core-logic, partly due to the fact that its technical specifications are outdated: it supports only single-channel memory and does not support Serial ATA-300.
For the once No. 1 supplier of chipsets, getting back to the mass market of Intel-compatible chipsets is crucial, as in the year 2007 and beyond there will be no at least one competitor there: ATI Technologies will cease to develop and eventually sell chipsets for Intel processors starting next year. At the same time, AMD's chipset division will be far more aggressive in future, which will mean that there will be much less space for Via in the market of chipsets for AMD processors.
In order to develop and sell chipsets for next-generation microprocessors by Intel Corp., Via Technologies needs to acquire Intel's license for 1333MHz Quad Pumped Bus.
