Asustek Computer, the world's largest maker of mainboards, on Monday announced a series of motherboards that will support Intel's new Core 2 central processing units (CPUs) with 1333MHz processor system bus (PSB). Apparently, Asustek enables 1333MHz bus support even on motherboards that do not officially support it. The move allows owners of appropriate platforms to upgrade to newer chips without mainboard change.

Our series of Intel Core 2 Extreme/Core 2 Duo 1333MHz PSB-ready motherboards once again proves our leadership position for the newest and most advanced processors,?said Joe Hsieh, director of Asustek's motherboard business.
Besides an array of mainboards based on Intel 3-series core-logic sets, Asustek supports Intel Core 2 Duo and Intel Core 2 Extreme chips with 1333MHz PSB with motherboards powered by Intel P965, Intel 975X, Nvidia nForce 650i SLI and Nvidia nForce 680i SLI. In order to install a new central processing unit with high-speed processor system bus, end-users will have to update firmware of their mainboards
Neither Intel P965, nor Intel 975X officially support processors with 1333MHz bus, however, Asustek still decided to enable it on certain motherboards, as the chipset silicon can handle speeds beyond officially declared specs. In fact, even Intel Corp. officially supports DDR2 PC-8500 (1066MHz) on its Intel 975X-based motherboard, despite of the fact that the official support is not declared.

Also, more Intel Core 2 Extreme/Core 2 Duo 1333MHz PSB-ready Asus motherboards will be announced soon,?the company said in a statement.
