The PaLiT Revolution 700 HD 4870x2

The RV770 core that AMD's HD4800 series is based on has been available for roughly six months. In those six months we've seen it used in video cards ranging from the $100 HD 4830 to the $500 HD 4870 X2. The HD 4870 X2 launched in August but up until now the AMD manufacturing partners have been selling the reference design cards. PaLiT has taken a step from the norm in releasing a custom PCB HD 4870 X2 with a custom 3 slot heatsink.

The reference HD 4870 X2 has default GPU clocks of 750MHz and memory clocks of 900MHz, 3600MHz effective. PaLiT has shipped their custom HD 4870 X2 with slightly faster memory clocks of 950MHz, 3800MHz effective. In addition to this modest memory overclock, PaLiT has also included DVI, HDMI, Display, and VGA ports on this card. Compared to reference cards with their twin DVI ports and analog dongles, the PaLiT HD 4870 X2 comes ready to connect to a slew of monitors and televisions without the use of frustrating dongles and adapters.

So, with all these changes, is the PaLiT HD 4870 X2 a better option than the reference card? This will be a tough call to make given how the card is unusually thick with its 3 slot cooling solution. Keep on reading to see how the card literally comes apart.
