We will be testing the U8-120-1600 cooler on our Abit AW8-MAX motherboard, which happens to be a socket LGA775 motherboard. The U8-120-1600 requires motherboard removal as users must install the provided metal back plate. Here is how it looks before we mount the heatsink over the processor. Make sure you clean up the processor and apply a fresh layer of thermal paste.
With the motherboard installed back into the casing, we proceeded with the heatsink installation. We strongly suggest installing the heatsink without fans installed because if the fan was installed, you will not be able to install the heatsink to the socket. Then using the two hold down screws (with springs), the heatsink is secured to the socket.
Upon installation, we noticed that the heatsink is so tall that it almost touches the casing?s top strut bar. You may also notice that we have applied the silicon pads on the heatsink to help reduce fan vibration.
Finally, the 120mm fan is secured to the heatsink. Although installing the fan to the heatsink was easy, it was a bit tough when uninstalling the fan. Anyways, we had no major problems with the heatsink and it had zero clearance issue with our setup.
