HD Playback Performance

In our previous coverage of Avivo HD versus PureVideo HD, we have already found both solutions to be very competitive and useful. CPU utilization dropped significantly with either of these technologies and it's really a matter of personal preferences since the performance gap is mostly negligible. This was repeated in our two Blu-ray tests here, with the Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-S2H and the Zotac GeForce 8300 tied for top spot.

The other two motherboards here have no dedicated hardware to offload the decoding from the CPU and this too was obvious from the much higher CPU utilization rates recorded. The 740G in particular looked like a big zero when it came to HD video playback. You'll need a speedier multi-core CPU if you're going down that road.
