UMD movies to cost as much (or more as DVDs)Sony is definitely out to milk the cash cow with a jumbo sized pump if Gamespot's assertions about pricing is correct.
XXX, Hellboy, Resident Evil: Apocalypse, and Once Upon a Time in Mexico will all retail for just $19.99, roughly in line with their DVD editions. Given its upscale pedigree, The House of Flying Daggers will retail for around 30 percent more, for $28.95.
I think that Sony is making a mistake in the pricing here. I mentioned before that I was hoping that UMD movies would be very cheap but I guess this is almost expected. Maybe toss UMD versions of the movies in the Sony/Columbia DVD versions for an extra few bucks? This also gets into the crux of the argument between fair use and piracy - media companies should not try to screw consumers over when they are pushing for DRM/proprietary formats. How can it be argued that making backups or transcoding formats for personal use is bad and wrong when it looks like large corporations are asking consumers to pay full price for two copies of the same movie??Flipping idiots!
