Stick a fork in it, socket A is done like dinner

The Inq is reporting that Socket A is headed towards the exit as the sun begins to fade on this chapter of computing history.?We noted back in December that the Athlon XP lineup was being phased out but now it is all of Socket A

This decision affects K7 AMD Sempron 3000+, 2800+, 2600+ and 2200+ but AMD left a choice to its customer(s) to buy a lot of these CPUs if they want to. It's sure that this will be the last time they will be able to. AMD wants to make this move as smooth as possible. The last order date for those CPUs is May 15th 2005 while AMD will order the last phalanx of Socket A Semprons to march out of the fabs on November 15th.
One of the big advantages of Socket A was the number of chipsets that had integrated graphics. This is changing somewhat with the ATI K8 IGP chipset but we should probably expect NVIDIA to throw one out now also now that Socket 754 is being relegated to the budget part.
