Reversal of roles have telecoms making a move into cable territory

It looks like Microsoft may have wider plans for Windows MCE as a report from EE Times has MS collaborating with Alcatel to deliver IPTV.

Under the agreement, the companies will team to develop an integrated IPTV delivery solution leveraging Alcatel's leadership in broadband, IP networking, development, and integration of end-to-end multimedia and video solutions, and Microsoft's expertise in TV software solutions and connected-entertainment experiences across consumer devices.
This is kind of cool except for the fact that broadband companies up here are getting more restrictive as to how much bandwidth can be used. This presents an interesting situation for DSL companies though as one telecom concern must be cable carriers pushing VoIP - in contrast telecoms are not really in a position to do cable broadcasting. Another hurdle will of course be DRM though Microsoft seemingly has that covered with WMV.
