Several years ago leading microprocessor makers were in the race for reaching 1000MHz clock-speed with their chips, now it seems to be the time for memory module makers to achieve the same milestone with their memory components. ASUSTeK Computer and OCZ Technology said they were able to ?break the 1000MHz barrier?in a laboratory and announced intention to release such products commercially in collaboration.

?ASUS is very excited to partner up with OCZ to break the 1000MHz barrier using premium OCZ modules and our cutting edge P5WD2 motherboard,?stated Raymond Chen, Vice President of Marketing of ASUS in North America.

OCZ Technology said that hitting 1GHz DDR2 milestone was a significant event for the whole PC platform industry and that the company would do its best to release such memory modules commercially ?as soon as possible? Dr. Michael Schuette, Director of Technology Development at OCZ Technology, indicated that such high-speed memory products were only possible through close collaboration between mainboard and memory manufacturers.

OCZ's currently highest speed offering is OCZ's PC2-6400 Enhanced Bandwidth Platinum series are guaranteed to function at 800MHz with CL4 3-3-8 timings with 2.1V voltage, a substantial increase over default 1.8V voltage setting for DDR2 SDRAM.

Some enthusiasts have already managed to overclock Corsair's DDR2 PC2-5400UL (667MHz) DDR2 SDRAM to 1174MHz using Intel's D955XBK mainboard based on 955X core-logic.

In early April, 2005, OCZ released DDR memory products certified to operate at 625MHz on DFI's nF4-series mainboards.
