More than just a search fieldThe Google Labs are like the Fruit Roll-Ups Factory, where you never know what they'll roll out with next.?It appears one their next moves is to allow web surfers with accounts to Google's services to create a personalized Google front page, with customizable links to content from across the web including weather reports, syndicated news, blogs and yes, even Slashdot:
"Google will start by offering content from the BBC, the New York Times, Slashdot, Wired, the Quote of the Day and the Word of the Day. The company also plans to let users add syndicated Web content from news sites and blogs via RSS, or really simple syndication, technology, said Marissa Mayer, who directs consumer Web products for Google.'Our goal here was to give users tools to customize and organize their own information,' Mayer said. She added that the product has more to do with reader demands than as a competitive shot at Yahoo. 'We've seen that there were users who wanted more on their home page...and this is a way to give them more access to their information. I feel this is different my My Yahoo. The fact that some people may say it looks like it's aimed at My Yahoo was not the reason.'"
The feature can be accessed in beta form over at the Google Labs page.?So far the amount of items you can actually add to the Google search page appear limited, but what's already there doesn't look shabby at all.??You might not make use of though?if you're already weaned on the Google toolbar (available for most web browsers) that lets you search Google without visiting Google.com in the first place.
In any case, just don't forget about the We portals, okay??:)
