Apple plans to release 2 GB/4 GB versions of its iPod Shuffle this June and AugustAh, the game of "Damnit, I could have waited for the next generation" never ceases to irritate me. It seems that Apple is planning to roll out 2 GB and 4 GB version of its iPod Shuffle, with Samsung and Toshiba being the suppliers of the 1 GB NAND flash chips.
Samsung Electronics was reported to have started volume production of 8Gbit NAND flash memory in April of this year, while Toshiba stated it will begin producing 8Gbit parts this summer. Currently, only Samsung and Toshiba have the ability to volume produce 8Gbit NAND flash, with both companies producing the parts using 90nm technology, the sources said.
Only Samsung and Toshiba? I could be wrong here, but it was my understanding that AMD was among the leaders in the flash memory business. They have the process technology, engineers, and facilities at their disposal to make some impressive flash memory -- at least I thought so.
It figures that this kind of announcement is made two weeks after I buy my girlfriend a 1 GB Shuffle.
