Alliant Techsystems, a U.S. defence contractor, has tester its scramjet at Mach 5.5. This was the first "free flight" of a scramjet powered vehicle.

The test vehicle was launched from Wallops Island in Virgina on December 10. The vehicle was 106 inches long and 11 inches in diameter, and after it was lifted to 60,000 feet by a rocket booster it started the scramjet engine and?flew under its power for about 15 seconds at Mach 5.5.
