Test Setup

In this review, we'll compare the ASUS Extreme AX600XT/HDTV against another RADEON X600 XT graphics card and two other PCIe cards from the NVIDIA. These are the NVIDIA GeForce PCX 5750 and the GeForce PCX 5900, both of which are not competitors to the RADEON X600 XT but these results are shown for your own reference comparison. The GeForce PCX 5750 is better suited to head up against the slightly slower RADEON X600 PRO while the GeForce PCX 5900 is actually a more powerful (and dearer) card than the RADEON X600 XT and there are no other suitable NVIDIA cards for apples-to-apples comparison. Anyway, we are not really concerned since this article is concerning the ASUS graphics card and the results of other cards are just used to give readers a better understanding and relation of the obtained results.

Our test setup was kept similar to the recent PCIe shootout and we do strongly encourage readers to refer to that article to understand where the RADEON X600 XT stands amongst the slew of new graphics cards in the more performance oriented midrange segment. The test PC is made up of a Pentium 4 3.2GHz Extreme Edition with an Intel D925XCV motherboard and 1GB of DDR2-533 memory operating in dual channel mode. Installed with Microsoft Windows XP Professional (patched with Service Pack 2) and DirectX 9.0c, the ATI graphics cards were tested with Catalyst 4.10 drivers while the NVIDIA cards were run-in with ForceWare 66.81 driver release. Our test suite was streamlined to Futuremark's 3DMark series and a couple of games since the full gamut of test results were already showcased in the recent shootout. The reduced set of benchmarks used to judge the ASUS RADEON X600 XT graphics card are as follows:-

  • Futuremark 3DMark2001 SE Pro (version 330)
  • Futuremark 3DMark03 Pro (version 340)
  • Star Trek: Elite Force 2
  • Unreal Tournament 2004 Demo
  • Halo: Combat Evolved
  • Command & Conquer: Generals
  • GunMetal demo benchmark
  • FarCry 1.1
  • Doom 3
