 Logitech diNovo Media Desktop Review

When it came time to use the diNovo, it did not disappoint. The keys have a similar feel to a laptop's keys in that they have a relatively short stroke and a distinct point where the "click" is made. The keyboard is quiet, but not silent, and is very similar to the feel of an Eluminx keyboad, though much more refined. I think this is the keyboard that a lot of people have been looking for- the number of users who want these laptop-style keyboards is rapidly growing yet many of these people are not looking for EL backlighting or gimmicks like that, they just want a great keyboard.

If you look closely at the board's layout you can see a huge advantage this keyboard has over all its small-sized, laptop-style competitors, because the numberpad is removeable Logitech was able to make a small keyboard and will preserve a standard 104 key layout. This means that the arrow keys are not tucked uncomfortably under the Enter key and that the diNovo gets a full-size panel above this, consisting of Home, End, Pg Up, Pg Down, and Delete. The Delete key conveniently double sized now that the Insert key is gone.

What does all this mean? The diNovo is super stylish but is one of the most user-oriented keyboards out there. This is what all those over designered products, like the Starck mouse, have been missing. They sacrificed function for form but the diNovo did not have to do any such thing. Its minimal height and stock "zero-tilt" setting makes it look great in front of you, so it would be perfect in an executive setting or on your coffee table for your HTPC. In addition it won't like like a piece of junk in front of your high-end LCD monitor. The designers also remember to include a tilt feature just in case you want to take it easy on your wrists for a little while.

This tilt example does a lot to summarize the diNovo Cordless Desktop. The kit was designed with style in mind but not at the cost of comfort or useability. Logitech was able to balance the two and they ended up with a superb product.

The diNovo set does have some flaws though. First of all the price is pretty intimidating. At an MSRP of $149 ($249 for the BlueTooth model which comes with the MX900 BlueTooth mouse) this set up does not come cheap- you are obviously paying for serious amounts of R&D and the number of revisions this board must have went through.

If the price was not enough to deal with, you have to consider the mouse. It is not a bad mouse, per se, but does it belong with this desktop? That depends on how you plan to use it- if you want to travel with the mouse, keypad, and dongle the mouse will be perfect for you, but if you just plan to use the kit in one place then you will probably want a higher end mouse. I am not saying that Logitech should throw in their new MX1000 laser mouse, but how about something with a few more features? Of course this will never happen because the massive amount of retooling it would necessitate, considering that the whole desktop is designed around the Cordless Notebook mouse's dongle. This is most likely why the BlueTooth version of this kit comes with the MX900 mouse, which is based on the legendary MX700 and is just about the best BlueTooth mouse you can buy (retail price for the MX900, $99.95).
