Conclusion
Like all of NVIDIA's manufacturing partners, MSI managed to seed retail stores with its GeForce 7800 GTX on the actual launch date. One consequence of this is that almost all the cards we have seen so far are strictly replicas of the reference design. The good thing is that consumers are assured of getting a card that performs exactly like the mostly positive reviews of the GeForce 7800 GTX that they have been seeing in the media. Whichever brand they choose makes almost no difference in terms of performance and even overclocking headroom for that mater.
Now you can play Chronicles of Riddick at the highest settings with hardly a dropped frame. |
Vendors have recognized that such scenarios just mean that marketing and price have become more important factors. Accordingly, they have tried to distinguish themselves by competing on price, the contents of the bundle, and sometimes, pre-overclocked cards. MSI's NX7800GTX-VT2D256E is comparable with its rivals in the market. Its bundled goodies may seem a bit diminished when placed besides formerly more lavish MSI packages but it is still pretty good on its own.
Therefore, the burden of ensuring that MSI's GeForce 7800 GTX stands out among its competitors falls on its proprietary Dynamic Overclocking Technology, which is an overclocking utility with preset steppings of clock frequencies that should be much welcomed by novice overclockers. This is especially so as the card is covered by MSI for any damages caused by using D.O.T. And generally, it has been most helpful as we were able to reach the maximum D.O.T setting of 473/1320MHz without any fuss. Given the inherent overclocking overhead available in the GeForce 7800 GTX, we think most users should be capable of duplicating our findings.
So how much would you pay for this card? Our sources quoted a recommended retail price of US$599, placing the MSI NX7800GTX-VT2D256E right in the middle of the competition. MSI has streamlined its bundle to price this card more competitively and the end result is an attractive GeForce 7800 GTX that should delight most users with its user-friendly overclocking.
