Speculative piece has NVIDIA eyeing the consumer electronics front

The Inq has an interesting speculative piece on NVIDIA's goals with Sony and the PS3 - while the PS3 will be important to both companies, NVIDIA is more interested in the consumer electronics front, specifically their role in set top boxes.

Sony and Nvidia will collaborate and potentially put chips in set top boxes or even rack mounted servers.

...

This actually implies that Nvidia will likely be spread around the Sony "run" vision for digital home and it actually means that Nvidia and Sony deal is considerably broader than just the future PlayStation 3.

This is inline with the stated goals from NVIDIA of trying to get into everything visual and we already see signs of that with their entry into the mobile (cellphone, not notebook market). The partnership is probably going to be more important for NVIDIA rather than the other way around - if ATI's assertions about their prowess in HDTV set top boxes are accurate, then NVIDIA will be fighting against a rival that is already firmly entrenched in the set top box market.
