Desktops to move to Socket M2

DigiTimes is reporting that 2006 will mark a change in sockets for AMD on both the desktop and server side of things and will be the first time where there will be DDR2 support.?

Despite motherboard makers originally expecting the M2 platform to use a 1,207-pin architecture, the M2 socket will be a 940-pin platform, the makers indicated. It will be AMD's Socket F architecture that will feature a 1,207-pin design, the makers added. Socket F will be introduced next year as well, and will be used for AMD's Opteron lineup, except for the 100 series, which will migrate to the M2 platform, the makers explained.
Despite the same number of pins, this does not sound like it will be the same pin-out as the current 940-pin Opteron socket. This story also gives a bit more credence to the report stating that the 100-series Opterons will move to Socket 939. It looks like AMD will try to position its desktop line up as an "entry-level" workstation platform. I'm still not sure how AMD plans to differentiate Opterons with the desktop variants of the X2 lineup?which also?had the embargo date expire last night.
