Will the last person in Windows 2000 turn off the lights before you leave?I'm kidding, of course. Windows 2000 is still a great operating system, but it's now half a decade old, which is closer to an eternity when it comes to software. Before Windows 2000 goes into Extended Support (June 30th), Microsoft plans to release a final Update Rollup, which "replaces Windows 2000 SP5 (Service Pack 5), and is a cumulative set of hot fixes, security patches and critical updates packaged together for easy deployment".
"The [quality assurance] tests are done, and it's ready to go. An announcement is imminent," a Microsoft source told Ziff Davis Internet News.
I figured I would post about this, as I know that a great many of our readers still use Windows 2000, along with one friend of mine (because he's stubborn and says Microsoft had no right putting that stupid Search dog in XP). Be on the lookout for the Update Rollup package. It should appear on Windows Update before news of the imminent announcement reaches sites.
