Stand-by power modes not all they're cracked up to be

After reading this article over at the Inquirer, I suddenly felt guilty -- I leave my computers on 24/7. The gist of the message is that all electronics, from cellphones left charging, to camcorders on stand-by, to PCs on stand-by, contribute to global warming and use a boatload of power over a measured period of time. The heading of the article mentions Intel, and I'm sure that refers to the beastly and power-hungry Pentium 4, though AMD isn't exactly innocent either (Thunderbird, Thoroughbred A?).

And, if you add in the energy wasted by leaving video recorders on standby or cell phones left to over charge, Britons wastefully pump an extra one million tonnes of carbon into the atmosphere each year.

Such are the benefits of an over-industrious, wasteful world. I won't be around for it, but one day humanity will look back and think "Crap! Why didn't we see it happening?!". Then again, maybe not -- maybe we'll wipe ourselves off the face of the Earth through nuclear war before we smarten up.
