Upon cracking open the box for the Logitech Z-5500 Speaker Set, the first thing to fall out was the installation guide. This is a great place for it since many techno geeks, including myself wouldn't bother to even look at it if it were buried at the bottom of the box. Being on top of everything my curiosity was peaked enough to actually take the two minutes needed to read through it.
Taking a closer look at each component here is the center channel that comes with the Z-5500 Speaker Set. The center channel is rated for 69 W.
Here is the heart of the Z-5500s, the Digital SoundTouch Control Center. With a digital LCD this is where the input source is selected, the effect (digital surround sound effect) can be changed, surround sound parameters adjusted, mute and volume controls all can be found. On the side of this unit are convenient connections for CD, MP3 players and headphones.
On the back of the Digital SoundTouch Control Center is where all the inputs are located.
Next out of the box was the remote with two AAA batteries already included.
Take a look at how well everything was packaged, these are the Satellite Speakers.
Once removed here is a better look at the Satellites with and without dust covers installed. These are rated for 62 W each. The only thing I noticed being a bit different than the Z-680s was that the bottom stands were plastic and not metal.
The last item removed from the box was the subwoofer. Again, this thing dwarfed my daughter - it's just huge. 10?high-excursion ported driver with 6th order bass reflex enclosure and rated for 188 watts RMS Logitech means business. I'll have to be careful that the cats don't crawl into this bad boy!
Here is a look at the connections on the back of the subwoofer and the huge heatsink that would account for a lot of the overall weight of the unit.
Inside the subwoofer is the Logitech logo... sweet!
The Logitech Z-5500s come with more then enough cabling to run the Speakers to different parts of the room. The ends are pre-tinned making a great connection without worry of the cable fraying over time.
Installation and setup was a breeze with these pre-tinned wires.
Using the HDA X-Mystique we recently reviewed, we connected the Logitech Z-5500s through an optical cable and the connection was immediately recognized by the Digital Control Center.
Here is a look at the front channel Speakers and Digital Control Center on the top of my desk.
