HIS X800 GT & X800 GTO Review

Date: 2005-11-25

[Abstract]
ConclusionATi has brought two very similarly performing chipsets to the table with their X800 GT and GTO cards. In the case of the HIS examples, the GTO is certainly the stronger part, since it...

Overclocking

So, what does iTurbo bring to the table for the two X800 cards? In both cases, hitting the iTurbo button results in the same increase in clock speed ?up to 500MHz on the core, and 1GHz on the memory. For the X800 GT, this is quite a conservative increase, but for the GTO, its an extra 100MHz (or 20%) right out of the box for free. Great though iTurbo is, you can easily use the tool to go beyond the manufacturer?s ratified speed and max them out. The maximum stable speed we managed with the X800 GT was 552MHz core and 1162MHz for the memory. For the GTO, we managed 548MHz core and 1184MHz for the memory. In the latter case, we are looking at a 12 pixel pipeline card running at a speed quicker than the X850 XT, for well under ?50. That, ladies and gentlemen, is a bargain.

At this clock speed, what effect do we see on Quake 4 performance?HIS X800 GT & X800 GTO Review
With nearly a 20% improvement, you can see why people overclock their equipment. Quake 4 was silky smooth at this overclocked speed, and even faster than the 6600 GT, which had dominated the ATi cards on the previous page.
