Test Setup
For our test bed, we paired the AMD Athlon64 3500+ processor with an ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe motherboard. This was complemented with 1GB of Corsair DDR400 memory running in dual channel mode. We also installed Windows XP Professional on a Seagate 7200.7 80GB hard drive and updated it to Service Pack 1 and DirectX 9.0c.
The pre-overclocked XFX GeForce 6800 GS XXX Edition was matched by two standard GeForce 6800 GS cards. Both the MSI and the reference card were clocked at 425/1000MHz, compared to 485MHz (core) and 1100MHz DDR (memory) of the XFX. Hence, both the MSI and reference cards should be performing almost identically, with the XFX having the advantage over them. All the cards were running on NVIDIA's ForceWare 81.87 beta drivers. To test our assumptions, we put the cards through the following benchmarks:
Futuremark 3DMark03 Pro (version 360) Futuremark 3DMark05 Pro (version 120) Unreal Tournament 2004 Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay (version 1.1) Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell 3: Chaos Theory (version 1.3) FarCry (version 1.31) Doom 3 Quake 4
