Test Setup
We installed an Athlon 64 3500+ and 1GB of Corsair DDR400 memory onto an ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe for our test system. Microsoft's Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 1 and DirectX 9.0c were then installed. For the drivers, we used ForceWare 81.95 for the NVIDIA cards while the ASUS EAX1800XT TOP 512MB (Radeon X1800 XT) was running Catalyst 5.11 and the reference ATI Radeon X1800 XT 512MB was using the early beta 8.173.1 drivers.
As you should know by now, the XFX GeForce 7800 GTX 512MB is not overclocked by any means but by default, it is at a higher clock speed than the 256MB version. Instead of the 430MHz core and 1.2GHz DDR memory for the GeForce 7800 GTX 256MB, the 512MB version is clocked at 550MHz for the core and 1.7GHz for the memory. This compares more than favorably with the ASUS EAX1800XT TOP, an overclocked Radeon X1800 XT 512MB with a core clock of 700MHz and 1.6GHz for the memory. Meanwhile, the original Radeon X1800 XT 512MB is only rated at 625MHz and 1.5GHz respectively for the core and memory. The benchmarks tested are as follows:
