Dual-core Athlon 64 soon, and fastAs I'm sure some of you are well-aware, the Intel Developer Conference in San Francisco kicked off yesterday, bringing with it announcements of some very interesting product straight from the heart of Intel -- product that is already in production.
Now, AMD has this little habit of party-crashing at IDF, whether it's by announcing or demonstrating something that might obliterate the competition, or by driving up in a limousine and trying to convince people to go to an alternate event. This year was no different.
In a counter-IDF briefing today, AMD demonstrated a production Alienware box running on a dual-core Athlon 64. The kicker? The first dual-core parts will run at a minimum of 2.4 GHz, and possibly more. And here I thought my increasingly-wimpy 1.8 to 2.3 GHz overclock was powerful. You can never win, can you?
The biggest news is that the dual core parts will be fast, very very fast. If you are wondering, the first dual core parts out of the box will run at 2.4GHz, possibly more. The one show in the Alienware box below, not an Alienware product, just a cool case, was a production model. It came in a production package with a production bar code. I am pretty sure that the launch will happen early, I am just not sure how many they will put out in the first round of launches.
If these are priced strategically (and they better damned well be, as Intel seems to be jumping on the low-price bandwagon lately), I just might be one of the first to run out and get one. After all, they're going to be S939-compatible. :-)
