Single card SLI solutions a sign of things to come?

Last June when NVIDIA announced SLI, we speculated that there would be single card SLI solutions which we have already seen in the 3D1 and also in a two of ASUS' upcoming cards.?The Inq is reporting that there will be indeed be SLI solutions that will extend to more than two cards -

It seems that Nvidia SLI can work with more than just two cards. It's possible to make four cards work together.

...

What might happen in the future is that an Asus board with 6800 Ultra could become the record breaker as with proper drivers it might win the performance crown.

suggests that ATI's Multi VPU can support up to 32 discrete GPU cores. A more interesting development rather than just extending the number of cores would be the ability to share a memory between cards so that each GPU does not need its own discrete bank of memory. Current SLI implementations waste a lot of space with redundant texture, geometry and framebuffer information
