Nvidia's 7800GTX follow up strategically axed? Did it exist in the first place?

More "news" on Nvidia's plan for domination of the video card market comes in today as ATI gears up for its stab at your PCI Express slot. The Inquirer today reports that Nvidia has officially cancelled its 7800 Ultra part leaving its 7800 GTX as its top-of-the-line offering for a while longer. Here's the story, humorous grammar errors intact.

NVIDIA DECIDED to cancel its upcoming G70 Ultra card, a real shocker. We checked this news really well as it sounded crazy to us at first place. However, there is good business sense behind that hard decision.

Nvidia knows that ATI can no ship many R520 XT's running at 600/1400MHz and therefore won't get into relaunching a new faster clocked G70 chip. The G70 Ultra was supposed to be a faster version of G70 card based on existing 110 chip, just clocked faster.

The validity of this news is questionable, purely because the existence of an Ultra variant of the 7800 series has always been just that. Nvidia's next move will surely be a while in coming, due to the fact that ATI still has yet to produce.

Even if the fabled R520 turns out to be a more powerful card, it won't be by much, so it would be prudent for Nvidia to sit on what it has at the top end, and focus its attention on filling out the rest of its lineup.

This would mirror almost exactly their strategy for the last round of cards, where they let SLI fill the need for a marginally faster refresh chip.
