One upping Nvidia in die size yet again.

The word today is that ATI will be moving to the 80 Nanometer process later in 2006. Seeing as Nvidia has yet to produce a board using on the 90nm, this would give ATI a further edge in terms of die size which tend to result in better yields.

ATI is working on its next generation products and is getting close to taping them out. We won't talk much about R580, the R520 successor as this one is still 90 nanometre but we want to give you a peak into a more distant future.

ATI has three chips based on the 80 nanometre process. One is called RV560 and will be the replacement for the just-announced RV530, Radeon X1600XT. The second two chips are codenamed RV505 and RV535. We know that the RV535 is an RV530 chip based on the 80 nanometre design while the RV505 is a low end chip based on the same process.

We know that those chips are scheduled for late second quarter 2006 so it will be quite a while before you see them in the stores. Still, it's interesting to know what is coming. Nvidia will start playing with 80 nanometre as well quite soon as this is the way to go.

The move to a lower process is definitely inevitable, and but it still looks like ATI will be further refining its 90nm chips now that it has all the bugs worked out. This is good, as ATI needs to get some more solid product out the door before tinkering yet again with a newer process.
