Date set for collision course between consumer electronics and PCs?

The first card in Sony's hand regarding Cell beyond Playstation 3 is reported by EETimes - home servers and Sony HDTV units will be the next items that will be powered by the brain of the Playstation 3 with retail products expected to appear in 2007.

Nishida said internal projects to design the Cell processor into home servers and HDTVs are underway, and that commercial products will appear in 2007.

"Right now, using the Cell processor in our HDTV products would be overkill," he said. The media processor's multi-core structure will shine in a future home server where multiple streams of HD video programs need to be simultaneously transmitted in real time to multiple displays, Nishida explained.

Intel's future is also the digital home and they started laying?ground work for their?endeavors with yesterday's announcement of the 854 platform aimed at set top boxes and HDD units.?With other heavy weights including Toshiba who is also involved with Cell development, ATI and NVIDIA all looking into set top boxes and CE things are looking to get crowded quickly.
