Much ado about nothing, or something after all? There are rumours flying about of a takeover of ATI Technologies, after less-than-stellar third-quarter results. Is this just fruitless speculation and worry-wartedness by the highly-touchy graphics industry, or are there some actualy behind-closed-doors talks going on?
Bob McWhirter, a portfolio manager with Selective Asset Management in Toronto, said ATI could be an intriguing takeover target because there are concerns the company has failed to launch a new high-end, high-margin chip in time for the back-to-school and holiday sales seasons.
I've got more faith in our Canadian GPU gorilla -- they've come soaring back after down-time in previous times. If by some freak chance ATI was taken over, I wouldn't be a happy camper -- NVIDIA would have almost complete control of the enthusiast GPU market, and that would mean less R&D, higher prices, and a lack of diverse choice. Monopolies in technology simply aren't a pretty thing.
That said, I don't want to hear about Microsoft and their supposed monopoly -- I've been using a Mac with OS X 10.4 for the past two weeks.
