Game guardSony confirmed during joint discussion between developers/publishers and Tokyo government officials last week that their upcoming PlayStation 3 console will feature built-in parental controls of some sort that will prevent the console from running software deemed too dangerous for fragile young minds.
"Sony appeared determined to provide self-regulatory functionality to its hardware devices, putting the decision over content firmly back in the hands of the parents and drawing the decision away from developers and retailers. The government were reminded that the Sony PSP has parental control functions built in, and Sony confirmed that a similar, more comprehensive system would be implemented in its PS3 console when it launches next year."
Given that the meeting was set up to debate possible changes in Japanese game ratings and regulation of game sales to minors, console manufacturers are no doubt making their move to reaffirm that responsibility over what children are playing should largely lie with parents/guardians.
