PS3 software won't be locked to a single console unit when runParticularly troubling speculation emerged over the past few week suggesting that Sony's PlayStation 3 console would utilize a type of DRM (digital rights management)?functionality which would "lock" any game software to the first console it ran on.?In other words, the software would be?tied to that particular PS3 console by way of its "title code" and will not run on any other.?Fortunately, Sony itself has taken the time this week to debunk all this:
"I would like to clarify that this is false speculation and that PlayStation 3 software will not be copy protected to a single machine but will be playable on any PlayStation 3 console."
The rumor stemmed from a patent Sony filed which would prevent "illegitimate software" from running on a machine other the one it was originally "registered" to.??Its intent is a means of protecting against playback of "used software and counterfeit software in recording media".
It certainly sounded crazy even before hindsight kicked in, but as the rumor came in light of the recent "rootkit" (essentially hidden spyware) fiasco which plagued Sony's copy-protected music CDs, anything seemed possible at that point.?Sony has since recalled the CDs featuring the rootkits because of the spyware's dangerous potential as a tool for hackers online.
