AMD appears to support 16 and 32 way glueless SMP systems with an upcoming core revision. At Analyst's day, AMD revealed that future processors will support 16 and even 32 way glueless SMP systems.
We are not talking 32 cores (in fewer sockets); we are talking 32 sockets!
Can you imagine if each socket had - for example - four cores? That would mean up to 128 cores interconnected in a glueless fashion.
Cray would love this, so would all the cluster building folks. Intel would not love this, and neither would people specializing in making small volume / high profit special purpose chipsets and motherboards; as if AMD commiditized large scale SMP systems their highly profitable niche market would dissapear.
