Going to Battle With Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory

Wolfenstein: ET
We also ran through a batch of timedemos with the OpenGL game Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory. Wolfenstein: ET is a free, standalone multiplayer game that is based on the excellent Return to Castle Wolfenstein, that was released a few years back. It uses a heavily modified version of the Quake 3 engine, which makes it a very easy to use benchmarking tool. We created our own custom demo and used the built-in timedemo feature to check each card's frame-rate. The tests below were run at 1,024x768 and again at 1,600x1,200, without anti-aliasing, with 4X AA, and lastly with 4X AA and 8X anisotropic filtering enabled concurrently.

Albatron GeForce PC6600U Review

We've seen GeForce cards do well with Wolfentein time and time again, and the trend continued here as well - at least at lower resolutions.  The tweaked GeForce 6600 on the 6600U put up numbers that were just 7 frames off of the X800XL at 1024x768.  Applying AA and Aniso changed all of that, however.  Doing so brought down the PC6600U by over 40 frames compared to just 11 frames on the X800XL.  On the bright side, the PC6600U repeatedly remained ahead of the X700 Pro.  A standard clocked GeForce 6600 card would not have fared as well.  At 1600x1200, the PC6600U found itself at the back of the pack.  Although we could not run numbers on the X700 Pro at 4xAA/8xAF at the higher resolution (an occurrence which repeated in other benchmarks to come) we have a strong feeling that it would still have outpaced the PC6600U here as well.
