Only Gamers Need Apply

By branding the card with the Gamer Edition moniker, ASUS has clearly stated which market segment their card is meant for. In case you still have any doubts, seeing the ASUS V9999GE in its full operating glory will dispel them instantly. While the practice of attaching LEDs (light emitting diodes) to coolers is not exactly innovative anymore, ASUS seems to think that more is better. For its V9999GE, besides having the fan glow blue when it is running, they have surrounded the cooler with blue LEDs that produces an attractive bluish aura. This will definitely appeal to those enthusiasts who have modded their system case such that the interiors can be seen from the outside. These hardcore enthusiasts are likely to have added their own system fans with LEDs and they should be delighted with extra LEDs. With the addition of an ASUS V9999GE, we imagine that the insides of the computer will begin to resemble a Christmas tree.

The focus on the gaming segment is also evident from the accessories and software bundled. Only the bare essential media-related software is included, namely Cyberlink?s MediaShow 2.0 and ASUS?s own DVD application. ASUS makes up for that with three full games, Battle Engine Aquila, Gun Metal and Deus Ex: Invisible War. However, given the Gamer Edition tag, we had higher expectations for the games bundle and those three games did not exactly set our pulses racing. Instead, the games we would have preferred were in a collection of six game demos included, which allowed one to try some popular games like WarCraft III and Tom Clancy?s Splinter Cell. Besides the games and applications, the usual ASUS utilities like SmartDoctor and VideoSecurity are included. The CDs are all neatly packed in an orange plastic CD storage case.

Blue seems to be ASUS' favorite color.

Only a single S-Video to Composite cable is included, along with the requisite DVI-to-VGA adaptor. ASUS has bundled a USB 300K-pixel webcam to complement their GameFace utility, which allows gamers to view their opponents and friends while playing multiplayer games online.
