For the final phase of our tests, we'll be using the media below to record the drive's write time for CD/DVD recordable formats.

Looking back at the results we got from our tests with the last Pioneer DVD writer reviewed in our lab, the DVR-A08XLA, its good media compatibility, fast write times and quality recordings were pluses that had impressed us greatly. Consequently, these are areas we'll be assessing for this review of the ASUS DRW-1608P.

    Asus DRW-1608P Review

Data storage on CD and CDRW media is still favored by many as they are cheap, widely available and highly compatible, making them ideal forms of storage particularly for files generated by office applications. On this note and with the assistance of Nero Burning ROM, our usual piece of CDR and CDRW media, the ASUS drive was found to a slow drive in CDR and CDRW writing.

    Brands of media used :?

  • TDK 4x DVD-RW = RICOHJPN-!11-001
  • Verbatim 4x DVD-RW = MCC 01RW4X
  • Verbatim 2.4x DVD+R DL = MKM-001

    Asus DRW-1608P Review

Utilizing a TDK 4x DVD+RW and a Verbatim 4x DVD-RW media, rewriting speeds of the DRW-1608P were found to be speedy as it was able to outclass most other DVD writers compared here. Notably in a league of its own is the 6x DVD+R DL write speed of the ASUS drive and with this, a single DVD+R DL recording session can now be completed in under 20 minutes. Coincidentally our first official 6x DVD+R DL burn time with this ASUS drive, filling up an 8.5GB DVD+R DL disc took just 19:12 minutes to execute.

    Asus DRW-1608P Review

Regrettably, the ASUS DRW-1608P was unable to detect our unmarked 8x DVD+RW for a full assessment and comparison of the two new rewrite speeds offered by the drive against the LG GSA-4163B, an All-Format DVD writer sporting the same updated write speeds of 8x and 6x for DVD+RW and DVD-RW media respectively. On a slightly more positive note, 6x DVD-RW was carried out successfully with the ASUS drive requiring 14 seconds less than what was needed by the LG GSA-4163B.
