Additional Burns
Apart from the usual set of media used to assess the write performance of a given DVD writer, our practice is to feed the drive with all available media at point of testing to gain a better insight to media compatibility. This is an important consideration for anyone looking to purchase a DVD writer. In addition, we can also determine the brand of media that would allow 'OverDrive' or 'OverSpecification' writing. Since the media used in this section are used on a basis of availability at point of testing, formal write comparisons between drives will not be made here.
16x DVD Burns
Brands of media used :?
Sony 16x DVD-R = SONY16D1 Sony 16x DVD+R = SONYD21 Verbatim 16x DVD+R = MCC-004 BenQ 16x DVD+R = PHILIPS, C16
Burn time for 16x DVD+R media has certainly been slashed since we first saw the BenQ DW1600 16x DVD writer in action. Nine months after the 6:16 minutes first demonstrated by the BenQ DW1600 for a 16x DVD+R recording, we're now treated by the ASUS drive to 16x recording sessions ranging from a quick 6:01 minutes for 16x DVD-R disc to an extremely fast 5:40 minutes for 16x DVD+R media.

A quick glance through the chart and one should be able to deduce that the media compatibility of the ASUS drive is pretty good. Nominal write speed of each media was identified and proper write speeds were accurately administered for all media involved, indicating the fine media compatibility of the drive. "Over Specification" burning on the other hand was not quite comparable to the likes of the BenQ DW1620 and Pioneer DVR-A08XLA drives. Even though two out of six 8x DVD+R media were successfully burned at 12x, the timings returned were in reality quite a gap from the expected range between 7:00 to 7:40 minutes.
