Introduction

Having reached maturity in DVD writing at 16x for DVD-R and DVD+R media for a few months now, and still without an official crowning of the next standard in high capacity optical storage, attention to the existing framework of technologies has been pretty sparse of late. While fragment announcements such as Sony's recent statement about the possibility of merging its Blu-ray format with the opposing HD-DVD standard have kept interests on the rather quiet developments of optical storage warm, activities and buzz within the scene are actually quite sluggish. This is understandable since 16x DVD writers are no longer novelties and have been around for a while now. Current advances in optical storage that are causing some commotion in the present context are faster write speeds for DVD-RW, DVD+RW and the recent reemergence of the LightScribe labeling technology from HP, a budding technology promising professional looking and lasting labels over its ink and paper counterpart.

Asus DRW-1608P Review
ASUS DRW-1608P

Accompanying us today is the ASUS DRW-1608P, a full-fledged 16x DVD writer with all the bells and whistles you would expect from the latest generation of optical drives, but with the exception of LightScribe. Listed within its list of specifications include new write speeds such as 6x for DVD-RW, 8x for DVD+RW and up to 6x for both DVD+R DL and DVD-R DL media. The chief burn speed of 16x for DVD-R and DVD+R media is of course listed as well, thus the generic '16x16x' term for this class of DVD writers.
